Lucy’s ready for her close-up!

Making her début here on Pup Culture is my little monster Lucy!!!!! She looks sugar sweet doesn’t she? =) ahaha shes got you fooled! She’s full of energy and just an amazing little girl! She’s so dainty for a Golden but she hangs tuff with all the boy dogs!

She got to go to work with mommy today (that’s me!) and get a nice little flea bath and spa treatment! She smells like Green Apples now! Umm Yummmy! Since I’m “Bow Challenged” when it comes to putting bows in dogs hair, I made her bows and a co-worker of mine put them in for me. She’s sporting Green and White, my old high school colors (go Helix Highlanders!). She wanted to make sure you got a good look at them so here is a picture of her little bows too!

Oh yeaaa and since we took photos without daddy being home SHHHH! Don’t rat her out for being on the bed! Yes., My bed is not made up. I’m going right back to sleep in it in just a few hours, why mess up the perfectly fine blanket configuration I made last night? =) We normally have a tan comforter but that one is at the dry cleaners so I had to pull out the OLD ratty maroon one.

So there you have it, the apple of my eye, Lucy Liu! And speaking of eyes, if her eyes look a little funny its because I tried to remove the red-eye from them!

And now Lucy has her own little Flickr Spot! I’ll try to keep cute pics of her up to date! =)

Greatest American Dog – Bill and Star!

This is hard, I like everyone who is left. But man I was really pulling for Bill & Star! I love them so much! Star is a great dog and Bill has so much love for her its amazing to watch! I think they got a bum wrap.

I’m guessing the dogs were put into that situation for ratings. Pushing the envelope. And BILL didn’t push the envelope with his dog. He knew its limitations and didn’t force her to do anything that would be uncomfortable to her! Hell, even JDs poor dog suffered injury, regardless if it was a mild injury or not that should be enough to tell them.., they went TOO far on that episode!

Bill & Star – You guys rock! I love you both so much! I’m glad you allowed Star to perform at her level and didn’t push her any further!

Dont know what I’m talking about? Watch this weeks Greatest American Dog!

Patriot Paws we salute you!

I saw something a few weeks back ago on Patriot Paws, it impressed me greatly and I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about this wonderful program with others who may not have heard about it yet. Patriot Paws is a non-profit organization that trains dogs to aid disabled service veterans (I think 90% or greater disability). These dogs can do everything form picking change up off the floor, taking your shoes off to assisting with the laundry (and so much more).

The dogs are provided to the veterans at no charge, Despite the tremendous amount of work and cost in training them (approximately 20,000 per dog)! This is a program I hope to see continue for generations.

Visit their website, consider making a donation! Most of all, tell others about the program and inspire others to visit the website as well!

Hats off to everyone at Patriot Paws, everyone who has helped to keep the program going, and the noble men and woman who serve our country!

Watch the video below for a much more in-depth look at exactly what these dogs are for the men and woman who need them.

Is your dog blowing its coat and driving you crazy? Finding hair in every nook and cranny? You gotta check out this thing! The FURminator is a deShedding tool and they work GREAT!

It doesn’t cut your dogs hair, it removes its loose undercoat hair which is all that junk you just cant seem to get rid of and keeps ending up in your vacuum day after day! This is a totally awesome tool! I love it!

See it in action here

Tell me, what do you think of this tool?

Itchy Dog!

I noticed the other day that someone was looking for advice on what to do about an itchy dog. Remember, I’m not Vet so take my suggestions with a grain of salt, and do what’s right for your dog!

Lets look at a few possible reasons for the itch:
Fleas
Dry Skin
Wrong Shampoo
Allergies

Fleas!

Fleas are the number one reason you catch a dog itching itself. Yet oddly enough not always the most apparent reason. Sometimes the little buggers can be quite resourceful in there hiding! There are a few tell tell signs of fleas. Flea Dirt! That’s right! You know those little dirty clumps under your dogs coat that looks like it went for a romp in the dirt? That can be flea dirt! You can feel it sometimes when you pet your dog if you work your fingers into the coat.

They like to hide until there is a small army of them! You can often find fleas in the following areas
1. Between the back legs and the belly
2. Around the private parts
3. Under the armpits
4. Around the neck.

Those are a few quick places to look. We had not seen any fleas this year and only whiteness mild scratching from our dog. I didn’t look too close at first. After I had bathed her I was looking at her underbelly and I could see a lot of little red bite marks on her. Poor Puppy!

To get rid of fleas takes hard work and dedication from YOU! You have to be committed to doing it. I may make a blog entry more in depth at a later time but for now here is a quick run down of things to do.

Bathing your dog in flea shampoo is not enough. The fleas are in your carpet, in your couch pillows and just about every other place in your house you would never imagine! You need to treat a flea 10 times more aggressive then you would lice! Bombing, Rug Powders, Cleaning Bedding, taking care of the yard. If there is a flea on your dog that means they are all over your house (if you have seen them or not!).

Read the labels on all the flea disposal products you buy, make sure they are SAFE to use around animals. Make an appointment to have your animals OUT of the house for the bombing process (Preferably having their fleas removed at that time).

This needs to all happen at the same time. You can’t go Flea shampoo your dog, then bring it home and bomb 5 days later. Too late, there back on your dog and when you bring the dog back in the house after the bombing guess what? There back in your house!

Persistence and Dedication, that’s the only way to beat fleas at there game! If you have a question about the flea disposal products contact your Vet.

Now, onto the easy part! Getting the Fleas of the dog.

Of course you can bring your dog to me and I will apply an all natural flea removal shampoo on your dog which will take care of your dogs CURRENT flea infestation. If you haven’t done anything on the home front its not going to do any good for you!

Once you have taken care of your house, brought your dog to me to remove his/her current fleas PAY THE MONEY to get some frontline or advantage topical flea treatment and put it on your dog to help take care of any ONGOING flea issues you may have. READ THE BOX! Don’t put it on your dog then go and bath your dog the very next day! There is a waiting period to allow the product to work into the coat, skin and take care of the fleas!

We got fleas so bad one year that it took me at least 2 months to get the issue under control and maybe 3 months before we were flea free. It took a lot of work but we made it through the summer! Fleas are no fun!

Dry Skin!

A healthy diet is essential for maintaining healthy skin and coat. So even though Rover LOVES YOUR POT ROST its time to consider moving to a stricter regiment.

When I was a child we had a dog who was allergic to her own saliva. When she would chew on her skin it started to cause hairloss, hot spots and extremely bad and dry skin. She was in A LOT of pain! That’s when we learned the benefits of premium dog food over table scraps.

I know that stuff cost so much more per bag right? Well something you may not know is that premium dog foods are mad with better quality ingredients and often require less per serving then non premium food, making the bag last longer. There are way more pros to Premium Dog food but let me just say, TRY IT if you think dry skin is your issue.

Also, bring your dog to me for a bath with some conditioning shampoos and remoisturizers to help replace essential oils in your dogs skin, sooth his/her current condition and help ease some of the discomfort he or she is currently going through.

Were going to go from Dry Skin right into:

Wrong Shampoo!

Do not use Human shampoo on your dog. Were as it may not make Fluffly keel over by morning, it may make her itch like mad! Dog shampoos are formulated for dogs. Your Fructis is formulated for your hair! Not all dogs are the same, your dog may do fine with your wife’s Herbal Essences BUT I’m telling you, there is a better alternative out there and MANY of them smell just as good as your wife’s shampoo!

Allergies

So you have Pumpkin on a strict regiment of healthy premium dog food, You take him in to be groomed every six weeks and his coat is as silky smooth as a baby’s bottom. You know there is no way in the world fleas are at play here! What is it?

Maybe your dog has allergies! Yes, just like humans dog can get them as well! If you suspect your dog has allergies I highly recommend discussing this possibility with your Vet.

Discuss all possible allergy relief possibilities. Is this something that can be solved with an over the counter solution? What about natural remedies for this? And last but not least does your dog need some type of prescription allergy medication?

Don’t be intimidated by the possibility of your dog having allergies. It may be something that is extremely easy to keep a handle on. But the most important thing of all is that you must be able to communicate with your Vet and find the right solution for your dog!

I tried not to do too many product endorsements here. I tried to offer assistance without offering “ADVICE”. Remember, I am NOT A VET I’m just a dog lover trying to help YOU (A fellow dog lover) find solutions to your dogs itchy skin!

Good luck! I hope you find something that works well for you! And if you do, please post here and let others know!

Rock-a-bye Golden, in the tree tops!

Thumb sucking is one thing, but paw sucking? ROFLMAO I miss all the good shots! I have to charge my camera to get some pictures of my Lucy Lu for u! I don’t think I would have been able to get this picture because I started laughing so loud when I saw it. I was sitting at my desk playing a little World of Warcraft I got up to get a soda and my dog (who sleeps REALLY HARD) was laying next to my desk fast asleep with her paw in her mouth. It was the cutest thing I have seen in a long time! I started laughing so hard and she jumped up with that “What? Who? When? Where?” “Just Woke Up” look to her! Lol too cute! Whats one of the cutest things you have caught your dog doing? Have any pictures of it?

Tell me about your dog!

Come on people! This is not rocket science here. I love dogs, you love dogs (you have one right?). When you bring your dog in to get groomed TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG. Does she have a bum hip? Does he nip when you touch his paws? Is he allergic to water? Does she have fleas? Let me know what to watch out for!

I want every dog to have a great experience during its bath process. This is good quality time filled with lots of love and one on one attention. I lather the dog up, use my nails to scratch the shampoo deep into the dogs coat, spend a few extra minutes scratching around the ears and neck (this is where all the good kisses start to roll in!). A bath can be a long process and involves lots of standing for both me and your dog. I need to know just how much your dog can take!

I had a dog come in today with a bad leg, I didn’t catch it when I was checking the dog in. She was HUGE as I was brushing her coat out and trimming her nails she laid down a lot but its ok, she was big and a little on the old side so I was willing to work around her. When I got her in the bath THAT’S when I noticed her little leg looked like it had been broken and never set right for mending. She bathed as long as she could but then she started getting fidgety and acting like she was tired of standing on her leg. I got her out of the bath as soon as possible so she could lay down for a bit.

As I was blowdrying her I leaned in and rested my shoulder against her chest to give her something to brace against to help with the process. Poor old girl! THAT’S something you need to tell your groomer at check in.

She took a little longer to dry and I pulled about 20 dogs worth of coats out of her brushing her out I know she feels a lot better! One of the experienced groomers helped me with her nails (because they were so crazy long) (THANK YOU!) and Im sure when she gets home tonight she’s going to be a very happy dog!

So its simple. I’m not the Vet., I’m not social services, I’m the bather (and future groomer). Let me know if your dog needs a little extra attention, or a little bit faster of a bath! Please?

Oh and for the love of Pete, if your dog breaks its leg, get it to the vet so it can mend right!

A little something cute I found!

Hello…. Grooming Shop???

Hello……. Groom Shop? I have this dear dog that’s as sweet as can be
as soon as you see her I know you’ll agree

If it is alright, I will be in about eight
If I’m not there at nine, it means I’ll be late.

Sweetie doesn’t bite often, she knows it’s not nice
just nips little children, and me once or twice.

She doesn’t like cages, can’t stand other pets
and if she’s upset, she just simply wets.

You may bathe her fur, but don’t let it soak in
I prefer that the water does not touch her skin

She has a bad back and can’t sit or stand
so have her lay down while you empty her gland.

She’s allergic to powders and dips make her sneeze
so please use the tweezers to pick out her fleas.

She loathes being brushed and watch how you clip
she has ten thousand matts, but I don’t want a strip

There’s a few more instructions, so here is a list
ignore that huge lump, it is only a cyst.

Leave her back long to hide her bad hip
a french moustache to cover the wart on her lip

She laid down in something that’s black and quite gummy
but she always gets cold, so don’t shave her tummy.

Poodle feet, poodle tail, of course, that’s the style
Don’t clip her nails, please use a file.

A very high top knot perfectly round
so what if there’s little hair to be found.

I’m sure with your talent, if you just use your noodle
you can make my Chihuahua look just like a poodle.

There’s a few other things you really should know
she wants some perfume and a polka dot bow.

I’ll be there to get her, I can’t say just when
but just in case, have her ready by ten.
